A friend of mine, having man trouble, was told by a Pastor to leave the man and let the Lord be her husband. I can tell you that went down like a lead balloon. I know she stayed with her soul mate, and has chosen to follow the King again. I don’t know who is first in her heart, it is not for me to judge.
It’s not a popular choice with women, letting the Lord be the husband – but He needs to be, has to be number one, numero uno.
Did you know one of the Lord’s names is ‘Jealous’? It’s there in the Bible in Exodus 34:14, where Israel is warned not to worship any other God.
Jealousy has negative connotations, but in this context it is bound up in the honour that is due the King, His reputation, and the concern He has for His name.
“The God nobody wants” explains it really well: http://victorycaloocan.org/2013/10/20/the-jealousy-of-god/
Psalm 23:3 says
“He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.”
The next chapter tells of the battle for my affections, the choice I made, and the gift I was given after I made my choice.
