The mystery of the seven stars

It’s winter here in New Zealand and Matariki, the Maori New Year.  Matariki is marked by the appearance of the Pleiades Star Cluster.  In the night sky, the Pleiades can be spotted with the naked eye as a dim cluster of stars above Orion’s left shoulder.

Matariki-southernFor the Maori, Matariki literally means “eyes of God” (Mata Ariki) or “little eyes” (Matariki.)  They’re not far wrong, for the prophet Zechariah, writing about his vision of a lampstand with seven lamps, tells of the seven eyes of the Lord that range throughout the earth.

“Who dares despise the day of small things, since the seven eyes of the Lord that range throughout the earth will rejoice when they see the chosen capstone in the hand of Zerubbabel?” Zechariah 4:10

Job 38:31-32 declares that only the Lord can ‘bind the chains of the beautfiul Pleiades’ and bring them forth in their season.

“Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades?  Can you loosen Orion’s belt? Can you bring forth the constellations in their seasons or lead out the Bear with its cubs? Job 38:31-32

Interestingly, the Pleiades are gravitationally bound together in a cluster.  How did Job know that?

The Pleiades star cluster means ‘the congregation of the judge or ruler.’

In the first chapter of Revelation, the Pleiades are not mentioned – but Jesus reveals himself holding seven stars in His right hand whilst standing amongst seven churches, which are portrayed as the seven lampstands.

“He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword, and His countenance was like the sun shining in its strength.” Revelation 1:16

He explains the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.

The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and of the seven golden lampstands is this: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.” Revelation 1:20

One star in the Pleiades is sometimes not visible leaving only six to be seen by the naked eye.  Another interesting thing is that the Lord threatened to remove the Church of Ephesus’s lampstand from it’s place if it doesn’t repent and do the things it did at first. Revelation 2:5

The seven stars are in the constellation of Taurus.  They roughly correspond to the shape of the seven churches which lay in front of the Taurus mountain range, a great mountain chain running parallel to the Mediterranean coast in what is now Turkey.

That might explain why the Lord wrote the letter to those churches and not the others.  The seven churches include two comparatively small towns, Thyatira and Philadelphia, while larger churches are passed by.

Like the sanctuary Moses made, are the seven stars and seven churches a type and shadow of the congregations in heaven?

Reflection Nebula in Pleiades

The stars are there to reveal light, to give knowledge.  Each constellation tells us a story.

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.  Silently, the night sky pours forth speech; night after night the constellations and stars reveal knowledge.  Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. Psalm 19:1-4

Although much meaning has been lost, the ancient language of the stars and constellations is still there, buried and fragmented in the legends of the world.  It’s like a forgotten song which far off voices still sing.

The Pleiades and Orion are mentioned three times in the Bible – in Job 9:9, Job 38:31, and Amos 5:8.  If they’re mentioned three times, it’s meant to get our attention.

Jesus is holding the seven stars, and God tells us in Amos 5:8 to seek Him.

“Seek him that made the seven stars and Orion, and turned the shadow of death into the morning, and made the day dark with night: that called for the waters of the sea, and poured them out upon the face of the earth: The Lord is his name …”  Amos 5:8 KJV

The mystery of the Kingdom of God

OnionWhat makes your eyes fill with tears, without feeling sad?  You’ve probably guessed it – an onion.

Like an onion, the Word of God has many layers.  Christ told many parables. His parables are the top layer, with many layers of meaning underneath.

Some of his parables were about the land owner, sabbaths, festivals and harvests.  The first parable Jesus told in Mark chapter 4  was the Parable of the Sower.  To the disciples and those with the twelve it was given them to know the mystery of the Kingdom of God.

“When He was alone, those around Him with the twelve asked Him about the parable. And He said to them, To you it has been given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God; but to those who are outside, all things come in parables …”  Mark 4:10

I’d like to share some of the layers I’ve peeled back over the 25 years of reading the Bible, and show you patterns I’ve discovered in the word.  I’d love to hear your insights as well.

Here’s some insight on the number fifty: Number fifty, what does it signify?

Mark 4:26

Great and unsearchable things

Google can’t give us an answer for everything.

Einstein said The most beautiful and deepest experience a man can have is the sense of the mysterious. It is the underlying principle of religion as well as all serious endeavour in art and science. He who never had this experience seems to me, if not dead, then at least blind.”

So who do we call when we want to delve into mysteries?

God says “Call on me, and I will show you great and unsearchable things.”  Jeremiah 33:3

“It’s the glory of God to conceal a matter, to search a matter is the glory of Kings.”  Proverbs 25:2

The joy is in arriving at the answers.

The Lord loves a mystery!

Mystery

Shroud authentic, real face of Jesus revealed

I have been asked by friends where I thought Christ’s body was?  I explained I follow and worship a risen King , who said of himself, “I AM the resurrection and the life, whoever believes in me will live, even if he dies.” John 11:25

My friends are smart people, and they deserve an answer.  The Bible tells me, “always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” 1 Peter 3:15.

So where’s the body?  I love a good “who-dunnit”, and the answer is shrouded in mystery.

There is no body here on Earth.  Where is it?  Is there proof Christ was resurrected?  Let’s have another look at the Turin Shroud – the burial shroud with the imprint of His risen body.

A team of researchers from the National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA), Italy, has found that the Shroud of Turin is not a fake and the body image was formed by a sort of electromagnetic source of energy. Scientists Suggest Turin Shroud Authentic

So how did the image of a crucified man’s body appear on the shroud?

Body in shroud

The features have been burned onto the top fibres of the cloth, without destroying it, in something like a scorch.  “The shroud image is made from tiny fibers that are 1/10th size of human hair and picture elements are randomly distributed like dots in newspaper photograph.  To do this you would need incredibly accurate atomic laser.  This technology does not exist.”

The image could have only been formed by some sort of burst of radiation, but the fact is, nothing like it has ever been found or reproduced.  The radiation that made the image acted perfectly parallel to gravity.  “It is suggested that the image was formed when high energy particles struck the fibres and released radiation within the fibres at a speed greater than the speed of light.” (Kevin E Moran)

Kevin Moon, Optical Engineer said “I believe the particle that made the image has not been discovered.http://www.shroud.com/pdfs/moran.pdf

In 1976 Pete Schumacher, John Jackson and Eric Jumper analysed a photograph of the shroud image using a VP8 Image Analyzer, which was developed for NASA to create 3D images of the moon.  They found that, unlike any photograph they had analyzed, the shroud image has the property of decoding into a 3-dimensional image.

Despite this, the Turin shroud was tested using the carbon 14 dating method, and declared to be a medieval forgery.  150,000 man hours of research and the work of scientists were brushed off from the results of one carbon 14 dating test.

The shroud has been through exhaustive scientific testing, and it has been established since 1978 that there is no paint, or paint pigmentation of any kind, associated with the image.

Joseph Kohlbeck from the Hercules Aerospace Company in Utah and Richard Levi-Setti of the Enrico Fermi Institute examined some dirt particles from the Shroud surface.  The dirt particles match with samples of limestone from ancient Jerusalem tombs.

The Sudarium

Did you know the shroud is not the only artifact that was preserved?  In the gospel of John we have two strips of cloth – there was the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head.

“So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen.” John 20:3-7

So where did the other cloth go?

The Sudarium, said to be the cloth wrapped around the head of Jesus Christ after he died, is kept in a Cathedral in Oviedo, Spain.  The blood stains match those on the shroud.  Also, blood tests done on both the Sudarium and the Shroud confirmed that the blood stains on both cloths were of the same blood type: AB.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sudarium_of_Oviedo

Kevin Moon, the optical engineer quoted above also said, “I am amazed that “church people” don’t seem to care about the facts, as if they know all they need to already.”  I don’t know whether that’s true.  I discussed this with my husband.  He had discounted the shroud as a Catholic thing, as they venerate relics.  (In this case, it’s just as well they did).  I got put off by the results of the carbon 14 test, but my interest in this was awakened by a news article on TV in 2010.  If you would like to see the news article, here it is;

So here we have the evidence for our risen King.  The proof of His resurrection is left on the grave cloth.  We don’t know how the resurrection happened, we do know from the image on the cloth that it involves an unknown particle that travels at a speed greater than the speed of light and defies gravity.  Science has done its job explaining the what.  Religion must do its job explaining the why.

I am sorry if “church people” haven’t cared enough about the facts, because you deserve to know.  May you know the truth, and may the truth set you free. John 8:32

If you want to know about the why, the Bible explains it, and I’ve tried to explain the why in this Blog.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

If you want to know more about the what, Here are some links to the scientist’s research I’ve quoted from:

Petrus P.Q.M. Soons, M.D. – Holographic information is encoded in the shroud in an interference pattern.  http://www.ohioshroudconference.com/papers/p24.pdf

Robert Bucklin M.D., J.D, former coroner and Forensic Pathologist for Los Angeles County. (Died 2001) – Autopsy of the injuries shown on the image:   “This is the body of a 5’11” Caucasian male, puncture wounds (wrist) and blood flows, swelling over cheek, and on the back, more than 100 lesions which appear to be scourging or rip marks.  Abrasian on one knee consistent with a fall.  Stake through feet … http://www.shroud.com/bucklin.htm

More research has just come out, which is covered in this blog: http://bryanpattersonfaithworks.wordpress.com/2013/03/29/shroud-of-turin-may-be-real-new-evidence/
