Blooming in adversity

When we moved back to our house in the late spring of 2021, the roses by the back door bloomed as if to welcome us. It was a welcome sight as we were feeling shattered and defeated by the actions of our government. We’d just escaped a city in it’s 80th day of lockdown.

The rose bush had endured it’s own ordeal.

In 1996 I bought my house, a charming bungalow / villa, and I planted a rose bush given me by a friend soon after. The rose bush rewarded me with pink and white flowers. I raised my children in that house and they were happy years. Shortly after I remarried in 2004 we moved away, leaving the house in the care of a property management company while we built a business an hour north of Auckland.

Over the years, the property manager disrespected the house and allowed it to be wrecked by a tenant. The final straw came in 2010, the year the poor old house turned 100 and we saw the condition it was in.

Taking the keys back, we managed the house ourselves, making the 1100 kilometre return trip to Wanganui every third weekend to manage and work on the renovations. This was my rose bush after years of bad property management. As you can see, it was gone. All I could do was yank the weeds, cover it’s bed with stones and cry.

The house remained empty for nine months while we brought the property back into a condition where it could attract decent tenants. In that period of rest and stillness, I was overjoyed to see the rose bush come back as it poked it’s head out from behind the stones.

Now, seventeen years after we left and ten years after the renovations, we’ve now returned to our hometown, after almost being driven out of business. When I wrote our business plan in 2006, I put “government stupidity” as a threat, but I never envisaged this.

The hometown is familiar but at the same time unrecognisable. Vaccine centres and 5G cellphone towers are springing up, while our governments march in lock step with the global biosecurity state. Every day brings bad tidings while healthy people run around with masks on, flashing their vaccine passes.

Vandalised and scandalised, the town is being torn apart, wrecked in the name of health and the marketing of fear.

It reminds me of the way my house was treated.

I look forward to a better day, the day when Jesus returns to take his property back from those who are disrespecting it.

Meanwhile, just like the rose, people will go into hiding.

It reminds me of this Bible verse;

When the wicked rise to power, people go into hiding; but when the wicked perish, the righteous thrive. Proverbs 28:28

Here’s my rose bush now. I’ll take it as a promise. Meanwhile, may we bloom in adversity.

It’s time to fight

How do we fight when the battle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms?

Put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Ephesians 6:10-17

This is no ordinary fight, for there is spiritual wickedness in high places. When you are battle weary, come watch this and be refreshed.

Remember, “The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.” 2 Corinthians 10:4

With Jesus, we’re all one

There’s a whole lot of stirring going on in the western world right now over divisive racial issues.  It doesn’t surprise me, I expected there’d be something after people were penned up over this so-called pandemic.  It makes a mockery of of all the Covid-19 restrictions thhough, especially distancing.  Someone in the US said, “I don’t know whether to wear a mask or carry a gun!”

Let’s give God his due, rather than the devil.  I’m glad that with God, we all matter, and we’re all one.

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”  Galatians 3:28

In these troubled times, it’s good to keep our eyes on the Lord.  There’s power in unity.  Here’s a clip from five years ago, I thought it would be good to play now.  Be blessed.

And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying:

“Blessing and honor and glory and power
Be to Him who sits on the throne,
And to the Lamb, forever and ever!”

Revelation 5:13 New King James Version (NKJV)

The kingdom of God – not a matter of talk but of power

“Who of you here are in ministry?” Chuck Missler asked everyone gathered at the auditorium last time we heard him speak in Auckland.  A few people put up their hands.  He then asked “Who of you here are Christians?”  Hands went up everywhere.  Then he asked again who was in ministry?  This time our hands stayed up.

I’ve never forgotten that lesson.  The trouble is we’ve been taught how to be led by priests.  We haven’t been taught how to be priests.

For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk
but of power.
1 Corinthians 4:20.

We carry the power, if we have the Holy Spirit.  To walk in it, we just need to step out, but that’s scary.  We have to be honest as well, and ask the Holy Spirit for His wisdom, guidance and power.   God promised that “as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name …” John 1:12

What does this power we carry look like?

This is a picture of my husband at Moeraki Boulders, pretending to explode rocks.  (I asked the Lord for a man who would make me laugh, and he does.)  This is what the power does not look like!

All joking aside, the power that God gives is grounded in His will, the authority of the Word of God and the Holy Spirit.

I think we would all agree we need to know the Lord better.  This prayer to the Ephesians says it all;

I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.  I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.  Ephesians 1:17-19

Did you know this power is the same power
God used to resurrect Jesus?

That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms,  far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.  Ephesians 1:19-21

The Kingdom

Jesus said “every scribe instructed concerning the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out of his treasure things new and old.”  Matthew 13:52.  NKJV

These posts are some treasure brought out for you.  Treasure hidden in unlikely places … like the Bible.

The treasure has to be dug for.  It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings.’  Proverbs 25:2

There is a reward.

This is God’s promise, ‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’ Jeremiah 33:3

Great and unsearchable things – knowledge you can’t get from Google.

Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding. Proverbs 4:7

This chronicles things that were revealed to me when I sought wisdom. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”  Matthew 7:7-8

Bear in mind the Bible can be read two ways; as a personal Rhema word or a Logos word for teaching and history.

One thing God has spoken, two things I have heard. Currently I am teaching from the Logos, but earlier blog posts from my book “The Kingdom, Here Be Dragons, Here Be Dreams are from a Rhema journey.

I hope you enjoy what I’ve discovered.  May God bless you on your own journey.

To the King belongs the Kingdom, the Power and the Glory.
