Do you believe that God is able or willing to provide if we ask, or do you believe that “God helps those who help themselves?” I had to grow up self reliant, so I believed more in self help. That was until I came to a place in my life where we’d just left college, we didn’t have jobs, and we were nearly out of money. We ended up in this tenuous position through no fault of our own, work we’d been promised didn’t materialise. I called that place “the mirage”.
Jesus said in His Sermon on the Mount not to worry about stuff, our Father in Heaven knows what we need;
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear.
Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?
Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?
Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?
And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendour was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:25-34
I wanted to believe that if we seek first the Kingdom, all these things will be given to us – but I had trouble trusting God for provision after the mirage. I worried about the future big time! My husband didn’t pray very nicely to God about our situation, he just barked “God, we need money, RIGHT NOW.”
God heard us. The next day we entered a period of supernatural provision that lasted for two months, ending when we got our first pay packets. We got jobs working nightfill at a supermarket 3 nights a week, commercial cleaning on the weekends and early mornings, and I also worked as a caregiver on Saturday night through to early Sunday afternoon. We were building a business during the day, and I wondered how we were ever going to get that off the ground. God got us seed funding for that as well. He did above and beyond what we asked for or ever could have imagine. Our business was able to pay us both after the first year, and we were able to give up our night jobs. That was seven years ago, and we’re doing okay, despite the recession.
